Australian Trucking Convention program focuses on business and safety

The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) has released the program for the 2010 Australian Trucking Convention, which this year will focus on practical advice for trucking operators.

ATA chairman Trevor Martyn said the 2010 convention program has been designed with the needs of trucking operators in mind.

“The ATA wants delegates to return to work after the convention with a pocket full of business cards, new insights and a to-do list of practical ideas they can put into effect on Monday morning – while their competitors fall behind,” Mr Martyn said.

“The 2010 program features a wide range of experts in the fields of trucking and business, all focused on delivering practical advice to trucking operators that will improve their operations and make them safer.

“It’s advice that major companies pay many thousands of dollars to receive – but delegates will get it all for the cost of their registration.”

Mr Martyn said one of the most popular presenters from the 2009 convention, Chris Richardson from Access Economics, will return for 2010, armed with the outlook for the next 12 months.

“Last year, he provided delegates with vital information about how to ride out the global financial crisis. This year, delegates will hear how to take advantage of the economic recovery,” Mr Martyn said.

“Another session, “Can’t Pay Won’t Pay,” will look at how to deal with customers who won’t pay on time or go into receivership.

“Our delegates will also have the opportunity to explore critical safety topics, including common weaknesses in company safety systems and the latest research into fatigue.

“Professor Ian Johnston AM, one of Australia’s top safety experts, will deliver a hard-hitting presentation that will inspire delegates to stop and think about their safety policies – as well as about what governments and companies can do to introduce safety innovations more quickly.

“Other practical sessions will uncover the best ways to approach recruitment and training to ensure businesses not only secure the best employees, but also retain them as the labour market tightens once more.

“This year’s convention will also feature an important opportunity for delegates to provide feedback to the ATA, through a two-hour industry parliament.

“Following a briefing about the results of the ATA’s 2010 industry survey – to be launched during TruckWeek – delegates will be able to put their views about where the ATA should concentrate its efforts in the next 12 months and beyond,” Mr Martyn said.

The 2010 Australian Trucking Convention will be held at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre from 7 -10 April.
