Infrastructure Australia chairman welcomed by industry

Federal Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese announced today that Sir Rod Eddington will chair the Rudd Government’s new agency, Infrastructure Australia.

As chair of a 12 member advisory council, Sir Rod Eddington will be responsible for ensuring Infrastructure Australia:
+ Completes an audit of nationally significant infrastructure by the end of the year;
+ Develops an Infrastructure Priority List to guide billions of dollars of public and private investment; and
+ Advises on the removal of disincentives to greater investment in public infrastructure.

The appointment has been widely welcomed by indsutry groups including Infrastructure Partnerships Australia, the Australian Trucking Association and others.

The Australian Logistics Council has also warmly welcomed the appointment of Sir Rod Eddington as the inaugural chair of Infrastructure Australia.

“Sir Rod Eddington will bring global perspective and experience from his extensive career in the domestic and international transport industry to this vital role as chair of Infrastructure Australia” Hal Morris, chief executive of the Australian Logistics Council said today.

“Infrastructure Australia is a critical innovation, ensuring the Australian Government takes a long term, comprehensive view of the infrastructure needs of our Nation.

“Transport and Logistics underpins the Australian economy, impacting on every aspect of Australians’ lives.

“It is worth 14.5 per cent of our GDP, or $150 billion each year to our national bottom line employing an estimated 1.5 million Australians.  Importantly, however, every industry in our nation relies on the transport and logistics industry to deliver, on time and in full in order to do their jobs.

“Improving Australia’s transport network and infrastructure will therefore be central to Infrastructure Australia role.  The ALC and the transport and logistics industry is pleased to see Sir Rod Eddington appointed chair due to his comprehensive and multi-modal experience particularly in the aviation industry.

“Decisions on our transport networks, as well as other critical national infrastructure, are too important to get wrong.  Sir Rod Eddington’s appointment today is a big step on in the right direction by the Rudd Government and Minister Albanese.”

The ALC is a national umbrella body representing all players in Australian transport and logistics industry, providing an intermodal and unified voice on issues critical to the whole of Australia’s Freight Supply Chain. The ALC’s objective is to ensure the Freight Supply Chain in Australia, for both the domestic and export markets, is as effective and efficient as practical by effective reform and investment while maximising the use of our existing supply chain structures.
