Woolworths supermarkets will be the first in Australia to offer shoppers the option of scanning, bagging and paying for their groceries all on their own.
The technology is being supplied by National Cash Registers (NCR), the worlds biggest supplier of automatic teller machines (ATM). The system works by the customer scanning each item one-by-one and placing it in the bag. The items are weighed as they are scanned, and a corresponding weight increase is expected to be detected by the machine in the bag. If, for example, another unit is added without scanning, or a different item to what has been scanned is added to the bag, the machine sounds the alarm.
The NCR Fastlane checkouts need only one attendant for every six machines, and will also dispense cash and petrol discount vouchers, and allow customers to top up mobile phone credits. The system has been previously trialled in Big W stores and is now operating in more than 15 Woolworths supermarkets.
Woolworths intends to have the self-service checkouts in place at 70 of its stores by the end of June this year.
