Recycle your outdated barcode scanners at CeBIT Australia

South Australian company OpalTec has called for retailers, freight companies and other barcode scanning users to drop off their outdated barcode scanners at the South Australian Government Stand, N20, at CeBIT, May 20-22, Sydney Exhibition Centre.

OpalTec Australia managing director Stephen Marodi says OpalTec is the only company in Australia that refurbishes and supports equipment from Symbol/Motorola.

"We support Symbol products for five years after they cease production," Mr Marodi says. "This is the kind of equipment that used to end up in landfill or on a shelf in someone's cupboard.

"Now companies that couldn't otherwise afford the efficiencies barcoding brings can do so."

OpalTec operates this successful niche business at its purpose-built facility at Technology Park in Adelaide's northern suburbs, where it gives used barcode hardware, including scanners, handheld data capture terminals and printers, a new lease on life.

OpalTec is on track for $4 million revenue this year, driven by growth in demand for its recycled barcode scanning equipment. The company is looking to expand its Adelaide workforce from 10 to 15 by November this year.

"We are on the hunt for sales representatives and a team of engineers to support our growth," Mr Marodi says.

OpalTec also recently gained the Australia and New Zealand distributorship for Unitech barcode products.

"This gives us another opportunity to provide the best product for our customers and complements our existing range from Symbol/Motorola, Intermec, O'Neil, DataMax, Zebra, Datalogic and Denso," Mr Marodi said.

Mr Marodi says that the purchase of barcoding equipment, associated programming and training is a significant investment for any company.

"These technologies provide substantial cost savings in the longer term through increased accuracy and efficiencies, but the price of new equipment has forced many of the small to medium sized businesses to go without.

"Our like-new products are now giving these businesses a more affordable entry point and helping support the environment through recycling."
