LAA University Scholarship winners

The Logistics Association of Australia Ltd (LAA) has announced the winners of the Swisslog and Logistics Association of Australia Ltd University Scholarships Program for 2008.

The University Scholarships Program provides an incentive for undergraduate and postgraduate university students to undertake logistics and supply chain streams and majors, with the aim of pursuing careers in these areas.

In announcing the winners of the 2008 University Scholarships, Mark Pearce, LAA committee member and program convenor said he was delighted at the response to the program.

“It was very encouraging to see such an enthusiastic response from so many young people keen to further their careers in the supply chain and logistics industry. The LAA would like to express its appreciation to Swisslog for supporting an initiative that promotes academic excellence in this field,” he said.

Swisslog’s managing director, Andrew Manship said: “We are pleased to be able to support education in logistics and the supply chain through this joint program. We believe that academic study is critical to the advancement of the logistics and supply chain management profession.”

Four scholarships have been awarded – two of $2,500 each at undergraduate level and two of $5,000 each at postgraduate level. Each award includes membership of the LAA and will contribute to course-related costs.

Undergraduate Scholarships for 2008 go to Timothy Latta from the Australian Maritime College at the University of Tasmania and to Paul Wilkie from RMIT, Melbourne. Both students are undertaking Bachelor of Business degrees. Timothy Latta is specialising in Maritime Logistics Management and Paul Wilkie in Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

The winners of the Postgraduate Scholarships for 2008 are Mark Wilson and Teresa Xavier.

Mark Wilson is currently enrolled in a Graduate Certificate of Business, majoring in Supply Chain Management at Victoria University.

Teresa Xavier is undertaking a Graduate Certificate in Logistics and Supply Chain Management at the University of South Australia.

The program’s sponsor, Swisslog Australia, has been a “Friend of the LAA” since 2000 and is a global provider of integrated logistics solutions for automatic or manual warehouses and distribution centres. Swisslog’s solutions optimise customers’ production, logistics and distribution processes in order to increase their flexibility, responsiveness and quality of service, while minimising operational costs.

The LAA Ltd has a solid record in promoting excellence in logistics and supply chain education. The 2008 Scholarships program further fosters growth of Australian tertiary education in these areas.
