Rail makes a comeback in the Riverina

regional rail logistics riverina service to depart

When shipping company general manager Steve Tzaneros looked closely at the Riverina and the bulk goods being trucked out of it, it took him minutes to decide to set up a new rail freight service, days to set up the company Regional Rail Logistics, and a few weeks to send the first train on its way from Junee.

“We saw huge latent demand in the market for a regular bulk goods service out of the Riverina into Sydney and got cracking. We have teamed up with Melbourne company El Zorro, who already use Junee as a base for their locomotives, wagons and staff, will be loading at regional terminals at Junee, Cootamundra and Bomen and have negotiated critical slot times at Port Botany for delivery at that end.’

“This is absolutely a fantastic result for the companies and towns involved and for Riverina exporters,” said Mr Tzaneros.

“By bringing competition into the market, this service will offer primary producers, traders and bulk goods producers significantly more transport choices. There will be extra work in the loading yards, and more locomotives to be serviced and maintained at Junee Railway Workshop.”

Dedicated Riverina – Sydney rail freight services have been in the doldrums since 2002, forcing the region’s exporters to shift their goods by road, or arrange to hook onto ‘pass through’ trains from Victoria.

Regional Rail Logistics inaugural load left Junee Roundhouse at 12pm on Friday 12th December. The company runs a 25-wagon freight train out of Junee and Cootamundra three times a week – the equivalent of 250 semitrailers on the Hume Highway.
