Cut emissions with biodiesel

UDT Logistics' Rupert Smith.

Driven by the desire to reduce its carbon footprint, Victorian milk transporter UDT Logistics has increased its annual carbon dioxide reduction to 14 per cent, or 874 tonnes, with clean, green biodiesel.

This is the equivalent of the annual greenhouse gas output of 62 Australian households or CO2 emissions of 218 cars.

Introduced to the environmental benefits of biodiesel in 2007, UDT Logistics director, Rupert Smith, said the company recognised biodiesel as a simple and cost-effective solution to reduce its CO2 output.

“Biodiesel was an obvious cost-effective solution to reduce our carbon footprint,” Mr Smith said.

“We’ve been using Smorgon Fuels’ BioMax B20 biodiesel since late 2007 and we soon noticed that the renewable fuel performed just like petroleum diesel, maintaining distance and power performance.

“Biodiesel now accounts for 85 per cent of our total fuel consumption. In the last 12 months, this switch reduced our CO2 output by 14 per cent, which is about 874 tonnes of carbon,” he said.

UDT Logistics runs a fleet of 17 predominantly B-double trucks to collect and transport milk, mainly from Gippsland and the Western Districts of Victoria, to various storage and processing plants throughout Victoria.

“I believe we are the first company using biodiesel in the dairy industry, an industry that often makes headlines for its water usage and methane output,” Mr Smith said.

“I’m sure many companies are searching for solutions to reduce their carbon footprint with the Emissions Trading Scheme looming.

“I can recommend biodiesel,” he said.

In Australia, emissions from road transport account for 12.6 per cent of national greenhouse gas emissions, with passenger cars accounting for around 7.8 per cent of total national emissions, while light commercial vehicles and heavy trucks account for 4.8 per cent.

Mile Soda, managing director of Smorgon Fuels, said that BioMax biodiesel offers consumers a means to improve their environmental position.

“Changing from petroleum diesel to our biodiesel is a simple solution to reduce your CO2 emissions and air pollutants, like black smoke,” Mr Soda said.

“Our biodiesel is made from approximately 80 per cent used cooking oil and 20 per cent animal tallow (fats) and canola oil, and all products are produced to Australian Diesel and Biodiesel Standards,” he said.

Biodiesel also reduces other emissions such as particulate matter, carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide, all air pollutants under the Clean Air Act.

BioMax is sold through five Liberty Service stations in Melbourne and from Smorgon Fuels’ deport at 9 -11 Maria St Laverton North.
