Freight council outlines strategic transport agenda

Better collaboration and planning, more consistent regulations, and boosting rail’s competitive position are the key themes to emerge from a wide-ranging report into the NSW freight and logistics sector, according to the Freight and Logistics Council of NSW (FALCONSW).

Acting executive officer, Hugh McMaster said the report contains a series of action agendas on these themes and others that arose from extensive research as well as workshops and interviews with over 300 individual stakeholders in NSW across a wide range of supply chains.

“These findings and a need for industry and governments at all levels to work together to address shortcomings in the efficiency of the sector were key themes to emerge from the report, which was undertaken for FALCONSW by PriceWaterhouse Coopers”, Mr McMaster said.

“Other important themes in this report are a more consistent regulatory framework, better access, as well as improved industry capability and image.

“Many issues and themes raised cut across regions, freight modes, suppliers of freight and logistics services and customers.

“Examples include improved rail access to Port Botany and through Sydney, more consistent road and rail regulatory arrangements, and wider use of technologies to improve supply chain efficiency.

“While not downplaying the benefits of large projects another strong theme was a clear preference for small scale projects with shorter, achievable delivery timeframes that have good prospects of delivering significant social and economic benefits.

“FALCONSW encourages all parties to consider how they can work together to address sector wide priorities.

“FALCONSW intends to facilitate regular engagement between industry and government to ensure key priorities and themes that can shape a more efficient sector are raised, debated and considered for implementation,” Mr McMaster said.
