Mr John Caldon has been appointed the new chairman of the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), the wholly government-owned company that manages the nation's interstate rail network.
Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner and Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese have announced Mr Caldon's appointment as a director and chairman of the ARTC Board for a three-year term starting on 21 January 2010.
"Mr Caldon brings with him a wealth of experience. As well as being a chartered accountant, he has previously served on a number of company boards across a range of industries including infrastructure, resources and finance. He is a former chairman of Rail Services Australia and the Australian Council for Infrastructure Development," said Mr Tanner.
"We are confident that Mr Caldon has the expertise and energy to continue the modernisation and revitalisation of the nation's freight rail network."
Mr Caldon's appointment follows the retirement of the ARTC's current chairman, Barry Murphy, who has served in that position since the company's formation in 1998.
"As the inaugural chairman, Mr Murphy has made a significant contribution to shape the company into the highly successful, professional and respected organisation that it is today. He can be rightly proud of the contribution he has made, and the government thanks him for it," said Mr Albanese.
The government has also reappointed Ms Andrea Staines as a director for another three year term.
"Ms Staines has served on the Board since 2006 and her reappointment is recognition of her ability to bring direction and purpose to the organisation," said Mr Tanner.
Ministers Tanner and Albanese have endorsed the board's decision to reappoint Mr David Marchant for a further two years as CEO and director.
"Mr Marchant has served as CEO since 1998 and has provided strong leadership, particularly during the past 12 months as the organisation has moved quickly to put funding from our Economic Stimulus Plan to work creating jobs and upgrading the nation's rail infrastructure," said Mr Albanese.
