As the conduit between senior leaders in the T&L industry and governments, the ALC is active in ensuring the views of the T&L industry are heard from the entire supply chain and its multimodal perspective. Without active and ongoing contributions from across the whole of the supply chain the ALC would not be able to fulfil this vital role.
In 2009, the ALC announced and executed a significant re-positioning to focus on advocacy, regulation and infrastructure, aimed at improving the efficiency of Australia’s T&L freight industry. The 2010 Forum will focus on ALC’s key strategic policy priorities, including the national transport reform agenda, Infrastructure Australia issues, and the 2010/11 ALC work program.
The December 2009 decision by the Council of Australian Governments (CoAG) to push forward on regulation for maritime safety, rail safety and heavy vehicles, has increased the focus on national regulation in the Australian freight Transport & Logistics (T&L) industry.
This move to national regulation has also increased the focus on the consistency of the myriad of regulations that remain with the states and territories. The Australian freight T&L industry requires one common set of rules if it is to operate at maximum efficiency. Ultimately, nationally inconsistent regulation and red tape only add considerable and unnecessary costs to Australian consumers and exports.
The transport and logistics industry is a critical part of the Australian economy, generating 14.5% of Australia’s GDP and providing more than 1 million jobs across 165,000 companies. ALC estimates that every 1% increase in efficiency will save Australia around $1.5 billion.
Invitation to all who have a stake in T&L
“I invite you to be part of the Annual Forum as the premier event for T&L leaders and decision makers,” said ALC chairman Ivan Backman. “This Annual Forum will set the strategic direction for the ALC’s work in 2010 and ensure the T&L sector works together to bring about the changes required to keep Australia competitive and ahead of the rest of the world.
“Join industry leaders for this once-in-a-year opportunity to make it happen in Sydney on March 3, 2010.”
“The necessity to drive efficiencies in the transport & logistics supply chain becomes critically imperative given recent Treasury estimates that Australia’s population will increase to 35 million by 2050,” said ALC CEO Michael Kilgariff. “Australia’s freight task has more than doubled over the last 20 years and is expected to almost double again by 2020. These are the issues to be addressed at the ALC 2010 Forum and we would welcome your attendance.”
The Annual Forum will take place on 2-3 March 2010. Click herefor more information.
