Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney events kick of busy year for logistics association

The Logistics Association of Australia is beginning the new year with a host of site visits and seminars in the eastern states, the highlight of which is a talk being given on ‘Warehousing Demarcation and Automation’ by a senior project leader from Linfox.

In Brisbane on 23 February, a site visit will take place at Integra Packaging, Yeerongpilly.

Whilst the site shows the manufacturing side of their business, Integra Packaging is an experienced, complete packaging solutions business (CPS), with over 500 clients spanning defence, mining, infrastructure, logistics, aerospace and general manufacturing.  With worldwide knowledge and support, Integra Packaging have access to world’s best practice in packaging design and products through their strategic alliance partnerships.

On this site tour visitors will be shown the traditional timber side of Integra's business where cradles, skids, hit and miss crates, fully enclosed crates, long run products and one off boxes are made.

In Melbourne on 24 February, a breakfast seminar will focus on warehousing demarcation and automation, presented by Carly Cummings, project leader, Linfox.

Carly's areas of expertise include DC design and operational simulation modelling; developing performance measurement systems; functional operations process design; project management; and demand management optimisation through the supply chain.

As time has progressed, the lines have blurred between the complex "box" of the manufacturing operation and simple ‘shed’ of warehousing. Robots, crane systems, RF, SOPs, HACCP, DRP, S&OP and WMS are now de rigueur in modern warehousing operations/management, aligning the warehouse more closely to manufacturing in nature and sophistication. Leading manufacturers are now treating their ‘shed’ as an integral part of their supply chain and, effectively, as an extension of their plant operations. Due to increasing complexity, implementing a new warehouse may now require a similar investment in planning, engineering, IT and implementation resources – and sometimes capital – as a new manufacturing plant.

The presentation will cover such questions as:
  • Where should the factory stop and the warehouse start?
  • What is the right level of automation for the warehouse operation?
  • How much of the warehouse and automation should you own?
In Sydney on 4 March, Sydney Ports Corporation will host a site visit.

Sydney Ports Corporation is undertaking a major expansion of its container port facilities at Port Botany to cater for long term trade growth. The expansion is one of the largest port projects to be undertaken in Australia in the last 30 years.

The project has two phases:
  • Design and construction: The design and construction phase includes the environmental and community aspects of the project.
  • Stevedore procurement: the procurement phase encompasses the search for a stevedore to fit-out and operate the new terminal.
Port Botany’s billion-dollar expansion project is crucial to the economy in meeting the growing demands of domestic and international trade.
