Exports drive Port of Melbourne container throughput

Approaching pre-GFC levels, total trade (measured in revenue tonnes) through the Port of Melbourne increased 9.5% in January compared with the corresponding month the previous year.

The significant increase reflects a progressive improvement in trade which has been evident since August with almost all cargo types contributing to the January result.

With throughput of almost 174,000 TEU , total container trade increased 12.2% overall resulting in the Port of Melbourne handling an additional 600 containers a day on average compared to the throughput of January 2009.

The positive trade figures were driven by full container exports which increased 14.7% compared with January last year to be up 5.6% for the financial year to date. Full container imports also rebounded strongly increasing 13.6% but remain down marginally by 2.5% for the financial year to date. Empty container movements also posted their first monthly increase since December 2008, increasing 6.4%.

The new motor vehicle trade posted its fourth consecutive month of growth, increasing 12.6% on January 2009 to be down 5.6% for the year to date.

PoMC chief executive officer Stephen Bradford said: “The strong export performance is an encouraging sign. Over time, cargo owners will also benefit from the additional draught depth provided by the completion of the Channel Deepening Project given that export containers are significantly individually heavier than import containers.

“With a newly-declared 14-metre draught following the completion of this marine infrastructure with a 30-year project life, we have already seen a steady increase in the number of vessels utilising the increased depth which became available on 26 November. In fact, the initial take-up has exceeded our early estimates.

“In the first three months from 26 November to 25 February, on average at least one vessel every second day utilised the increased draught depth. During this period, the port hosted 403 movements by vessels with a registered summer draught greater than the previous all-tides draught of 11.6 metres. Of these, 51 vessels had an operating draught greater than 11.6 metres and hence utilised the additional available depth.”

For the same period last year, 13 vessels entered the port with a draught greater than 11.6 metres – all of which required tidal assistance - a constraint that has been remedied with the project’s completion.

“The largest of those to use the additional depth was the liquid bulk carrier, Esteem Grandeur, which entered the port earlier this month with a declared draught of 13.9 metres.”
