Victoria to ban trucks from the fast lane

Trucks will be banned from the right hand lane on multi-lane freeways in Victoria as part of Victorian Government plan to improve safety and encourage better road sharing across the state.

The new restrictions are to be implemented by the middle of this year on the Princes Freeway (Geelong Road) between the Western Ring Road interchange and Beach Road interchange at Lara, with a progressive rollout to follow on other freeways.

Restricting trucks from the right-hand lane on freeways with three or more lanes of traffic in each direction is aimed at making some of the busiest roads in the state safer, while ensuring the needs of all drivers on these roads are met.

The 38 kilometre stretch of the Princes Freeway is just the start of the government’s plans, with lane restrictions for heavy vehicles also to be rolled out on the West Gate Freeway, west of Williamstown Road to the M80 Ring Road, the Eastern Freeway and EastLink.

Other roads, including CityLink, the M1 corridor and the M80 Ring Road, are being investigated as part of the lane restrictions plan.

A recent RACV survey found 83 per cent of motorists believed trucks should be restricted from using the right-hand lane where there are three or more lanes of traffic each way on freeways.

The Victorian Transport Association (VTA) has responded to the announcement with a positive but cautious view of the plan.

VTA chief executive Philip Lovel AM said: “The VTA will be working with Government to implement the exclusion lanes on the initial trial roads, and we will be closely monitoring the developments.

“We are pleased that Minister Pallas has consulted the association on this issue. We were aware of this plan and have been debating the issue for a long time. Now the decision has been made and we will work with it. What is most important to us is that these new restrictions must not compromise road safety or freight transport efficiency.

“The key to this plan working is that all motorists need to change their attitudes, not just truck drivers. Motorists need to ensure they are observing the road rules to keep left and keeping up with the speed limits. The keep left rules are mandatory, as contained in Road Rule 130, and all drivers should obse...
