Action at last: fatigue training, improved rest areas for truck drivers
The NSW Government is implementing a new training package to help truck drivers manage fatigue.
Minister Assisting the Minister for Transport and Roads David Borger made the announcement at the Livestock and Bulk Carriers Conference in Tamworth.
“Over the coming weeks the RTA will be working with the Livestock and Bulk Carriers Association and Natroad to roll out a training package that will promote a better understanding of both advanced and basic fatigue management,” Mr Borger said.
“The focus will be on developing greater industry understanding of the importance of moving to better fatigue practices and how to achieve accreditation.
“The idea for this was proposed jointly by LBCA and Natroad. We have listened and now we are acting.
“It is in all our interests to support the proactive industry stance on training and I will ensure the RTA works with them to achieve a training program tailored to industry requirements.
The NSW Government extended the fatigue management laws through the chain of responsibility legislation in 2008.
Mr Borger said it is appropriate the Government and the RTA support the heavy vehicle industry in understanding these laws.
Mr Borger also announced that the NSW Government is matching almost $10 million in Federal funding to upgrade heavy vehicle rest areas on the Hume, Mitchell, Newell, New England and Princes highways and to build a new one on the Newell Highway.
“The NSW Government has part of the Federal government’s $40 million stage two heavy vehicle rest area strategy funding,” Mr Borger said.
“The Federal and NSW governments have already invested $16 million in upgrading existing and building new rest areas.
“The Federal government has offered NSW another $9.76 million to upgrade heavy vehicle rest areas, on the basis that NSW matches that funding.
“Today I can announce that NSW has accepted that offer and will contribute $9.76 million on a dollar-for-dollar basis.”
Mr Borger said the rest areas will be at the located along Hume Highway, Mitchell Highway, Newell Highway, New England Highway, Princes Highway. Exact locations and details will be confirmed following further consultation.
There are more than 1,400 rest areas across NSW with more than 1,000 suitable for heavy vehicles.
