ALLRig to launch new drowsy driver detection device at 2010 ITTE Show

PACCAR Parts, the truck and trailer parts distribution organisation behind the ALLRig chain of outlets, is set to launch a new safety device through its nationwide distribution network.

The Kenworth, DAF and all-makes parts specialists has just signed on to distribute the Optalert personal safety device, helping drivers to detect the early signs of drowsiness in real time, whilst maintaining alertness

The innovative glasses, worn by the driver, continuously measure drowsiness by detecting changes in eye and eyelid movements. Connected to a processor, which is installed within the vehicle, the system gives drivers minute-by-minute information on their level of drowsiness and the risk of a crash. The driver’s drowsiness level is displayed as a score from 0 to 10 on a dash mounted screen, with a higher score indicating a higher level of drowsiness. This indicator also shows the risk of a drowsy crash (low, medium, high) at the time.

The device alerts the driver to the onset of drowsiness through a loud beep and voice messages. This allows the driver to take suitable precautionary measures in order to return to an alert state of mind and drive safely.

“This is ground-breaking technology is presented in a very simple piece of eye wear,” said Ross Hudson, general manager of ALLRig. “The device alerts the operator before he ever becomes self-aware of the danger of his drowsiness, and that data is presented on an easy-to-read drowsiness indicator.”

The driver can then view this ‘drowsiness score’ on-demand in real time, giving him ownership of his fatigue management.

“For our customers, the immediate benefits of this system include protecting drivers, assets and other road users from one of the major behavioural causes of accidents – fatigue,” said Ross.

“The sheer cost of repairs, equipment replacement, accident investigation, compensation, legal representation and insurance premium rises all have the potential to be significantly reduced through the use of Optalert.

“What we like about the Optalert system is that it is all about the driver. It’s not intrusive and gives them time to take action before it is too late.

Optalert chief executive officer, John Prendergast, added that in some cases the integration of Optalert created a more productive workforce and even helped to win business for progressive fleets and owner drivers.

“We find that owner-drivers in particular have an acute awareness of fatigue issues and of course value their own safety. They want to keep repair costs low and keep the truck on the road earning money. Many owner operators have found the Optalert system to be a very affordable insurance policy on their personal safety,” he said.
