International expert warns on supply chain security

Many of the managers given responsibility for the risk management and supply chain security have been given very little training or resources, according to leading supply chain security expert, Juha Hintsa from the Cross-border Research Association, CBRA, based in Lausanne, Switzerland.

“But every supply chain needs to protect itself from the risks of theft, fraud, smuggling and terrorism. It is a matter of corporate responsibility that needs to be placed on the agenda of every boardroom meeting and not left solely to middle-management with limited resources and little or no authority to enact necessary change.”

He adds: “A proliferation of regulations and government initiatives means that this is a matter that can no longer be treated as a purely internal affair.”

In an effort to increase awareness among the management and especially senior management of companies around the world, CBRA is teaming up with The Shippers’ Voice to produce Searchlight, a monthly report of supply chain security news, developments and insights.

Dr Andrew Traill of The Shippers’ Voice free information portal says: “Risk management is just not taken seriously by many companies at boardroom level. I produced a risk management report and guide not so long ago for Drewry Shipping Consultants and was shocked then by the ad hoc way many companies dealt with risk management.

“Many who are given the responsibility are given very little training or resources. Crime and terrorism are major issues that business needs to address, not just to curb losses but also to comply with regulations. If through this collaboration with the CBRA we can raise the profile of the issues and help people identify the risks and what they might do to protect themselves then it will be a positive step forward.”

The digest, beginning this month, will comprise:
Reviews on relevant supply chain security (SCS) literature: books, articles, columns etc.
Snapshots on latest CBRA research projects and findings.
Interviews with SCS private and public sector experts.
Success (and failure) stories on the fight against crime in supply chains.
Factual updates on supply chain crime incidents, modus operandi and trends.
Factual updates on SCS regulations and standards as they develop.
Reviews of commercial events, services and products related to SCS.
Questions & answers.
