MaxiTRANS launches ecoFridge, wins award

Following its debut at the International Truck and Trailer Show in Melbourne during March, ecoFridge has won the award for ‘Most Unique Show Attraction’ at the 2010 ITTE Expo Awards.

MaxiTRANS used the show to launch ecoFridge, a liquid Nitrogen-powered refrigerated trailer, which it claims to be is the most advanced, silent running and emission-free vehicle for cost-effective temperature-controlled transport.

The ecoFridge drew much interest from the large number of refrigerated fleet and owner driver operators who attended the show, as well as numerous industry journalists. Liam Olliff, sales and marketing director for ecoFridge, had flown in especially for the Australian launch and he explained and demonstrated every aspect of the innovative trailer that will allow operators to improve their refrigerated operations as well as reduce their fleet carbon emissions.

In comparison to conventional diesel refrigeration units, ecoFridge has no direct emissions and operates in complete silence. Because it has virtually no moving parts, it is almost maintenance free, thus reducing maintenance costs and downtime compared to conventional fridge plants. Customers may ensure absolute emission- free status by specifying that their liquid Nitrogen supplies are generated by renewable energy.

The ecoFridge uses liquid Nitrogen to cool the van and maintain low temperatures and can pull down to set temperature 70% faster than conventional systems with no top freezing.

Nitrogen makes up 78% of the air, so the ecoFridge simply recycles this same inert gas that has previously been pumped from the earth’s atmosphere and converted to liquid form. Liquid Nitrogen is stored at a temperature of -196°C under the trailer in a safe, low-pressure, vacuum insulated tank.

Because ecoFridge is silent, companies making urban deliveries will no longer be restricted by curfews imposed due to the noise of conventional refrigeration systems. This will enable operational savings through the avoidance of peak traffic periods. Furthermore, drivers will really appreciate the silence and better working environment provided by ecoFridge.

Due to ecoFridge having no direct emissions, it will assist companies to meet their carbon reduction targets while also reducing smoke and odours in warehouse loading bays. It is also good for the corporate image of the operators.

Liquid Nitrogen is available from three major suppliers in Australia and customers will most likely install bulk supply tanks at their key distribution warehouses. The 1,000 litre Nitrogen tank beneath the van is expected to provide operation times of around 30 hours or more between refills, potentially making it suitable for line-haul use.

Local gas suppliers are expected to be very keen to capitalise on an all new market for their gas and very supportive of the field trial programme.

Overall ecoFridge operating costs are being evaluated in MaxiTRANS’ field trials under Australian operating conditions. Indications from other locations are that operational savings compared to conventional refrigeration systems may be possible. Customers have found it to be especially economical when operating as a chiller and have likewise found it to be very beneficial in hub and spoke distribution operations.

MaxiTRANS is commencing extensive field trials to confirm the suitability of ecoFridge for local operating conditions prior to making it available for sale. MaxiTRANS is the exclusive ecoFridge agent for Australia and New Zealand.
