WA trucking exhibition at Whiteman Park

A new exhibition at Whiteman Park explores the history of trucking in Western Australia.

The ‘Long Haul – The Rise of Trucking in Western Australia’ runs until 31 October at Revolutions, the park’s land transport heritage centre.

Park manager Steve Lowe said: “Today Western Australians take our truck-dependent economy for granted. It is hard to imagine what a hard road it has been to get there.

“This exhibition fills in some of those gaps and will awaken a new appreciation for the trucks on our roads. We are grateful to the members of the Historic Commercial Vehicle Club for their assistance in making this exhibition happen.

“Highlights of the exhibition include a short DVD of 8mm film shot in the early 1960s by the late Albert Earnshaw, who was employed by owner-driver George Baker. George has given a lot of time to tell his story for the exhibition.

“There will also be a 2.4m model of a Gascoyne Truck from the 1970s, when it was the latest thing on the road. It was displayed in the office of Gascoyne Trading for years – at Jackson Street, Bassendean, and we are hoping that someone will remember seeing it and can tell us who made it.”

The exhibition extends into Whiteman Park’s Motor Museum and Tractor Museum, where some beautifully restored trucks have been loaned for display.

Also linked to the exhibition will be a program of activities during April, including the opportunity for youngsters to make a truck from recycled materials.
