Scania wins power play with 730 hp V8

With 544 kW (730 hp) and 3500 Nm (2581 lb ft) on tap, Scania’s new top-rated DC16 V8 comfortably eclipses the 522 kW (700 hp) and 3150 Nm (2323 lb ft) ratings of Volvo’s six cylinder D16C, a feat sure to get right up its competitive countryman’s nose.

Scania’s V8 now comes with four power ratings: 500, 560, 620 and 730 hp – all certified to meet Euro 5 and EEV emissions standards. In conjunction with the launch of the new top-output engine in Europe, Scania’s range of V8 truck models – based on the new Scania R-series – has been given a unique identity intended to reflect the strong position these models enjoy in the European market among drivers and owners alike.

“Scania’s V8 trucks have built a niche of their own in the truck market,” said Henrik Henriksson, senior vice-president of trucks at Scania. “The vast majority of Scania’s V8 customers buy for rational reasons. They need the performance, dependability and availability to get the job done as efficiently as possible.

“The sheer power of the new R730 is important, but even more so is the torque rating. Having 3500 Nm of torque on tap makes a joy out of any transport task and is bound to put a smile on every driver’s face,” Henriksson concluded.

Scania says the truck’s powertrain has been adapted to handle the additional outputs with a reinforced Scania Opticruise automated transmission fitted as standard. Scania further asserts that thanks to the smooth power delivery inherent in a V8 engine, other powertrain components remain largely unchanged.

There’s no word yet from Scania Australia as to if or when the 730 hp flagship will be available here. However, with rumours persisting that Volvo’s 700 hp rating could make its Down Under debut as early as next year, the other Swede’s top toiler may not be too far behind.
