Woolworths Queensland DC sets the standard in forklift competition

The National Forklift Championship continues to grow in popularity as a must-do event, with Woolworth’s Queensland DC hosting an in-house competition. This DC, located at Larapinta, works 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is the distribution hub for Woolworths Queensland.

With assistance from the national forklift coordinator, Jamie Cotter and his team designed a competition course that included a number of complicated manoeuvres and tasks. To ensure that the test was achievable within a set timeframe, the in-house forklift trainer drove the course and then added a 50% margin.

“Safety is essential in the workplace so we’ve also included a site risk assessment component,” Jamie added. The site uses a wide range of forklifts, both counter-balanced and reach trucks of varying capacities. Although productivity is always an operational consideration, safety must be included in every process.

Throughout the day, male and female contestants participated in the competition, which was videotaped by a staff member. This process created some additional pressure on each contestant to not make any operator errors. It also provided a record of how each person performed under competition pressure.

The two judges who assessed each contestant work in the forklift training and assessment industry, and are able to decide quite quickly as to the competency of a forklift operator. The process is that each contestant starts the competition with a score of zero and as operating errors are made, penalty points are added. The winners in both categories are those with low points within the set timeframe.

The winners on the day were Annie Walker, who was the top female driver, and Mark Kane, the top male driver. Both contestants will be eligible to compete at the Grand Final of the National Forklift Championship in Sydney on 28 October. Winners will receive prize money of $1,500 and a silver trophy.

To celebrate the success of the event, Woolworths’ management provided a barbeque to congratulate the winners and plan strategies to work towards winning the National Championship for 2010.
