Qantas to generate own power at Sydney Airport

Qantas will install Australia’s first tri-generation airport facility at Sydney Airport’s Qantas Jet Base and Domestic Terminal 3 in New South Wales, designed by AECOM in association with GridX Power.

Two proposed tri-generation plants with 9.6 MW of power would provide three sources of energy output from one source of fuel input (natural gas), reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions.

The tri-generation initiative captures and re-uses waste heat that would otherwise be lost to achieve efficiencies of around 80% compared with an average of 35% for a conventional grid.

AECOM NSW buildings manager David Caleo said: “Tri-generation is an exciting and leading-edge concept that has not previously been undertaken at this scale within the aviation industry in Australia.”

“The proposed tri-generation plants would reduce overall energy consumption and carbon emissions by re-utilising the waste heat from gas-fired generators to provide power site-wide cooling and heating.

“Tri-generation is an emerging concept in Australia and AECOM has been involved at all levels of tri-generation project delivery from feasibility, design, installation, and commissioning across all industry sectors,” Mr Caleo said.

AECOM will provide a multi-disciplinary service covering high-voltage power generation, site-wide cooling and heating, hydraulics, acoustic treatment and structural design input.

Site works are due to commence in September under a 15-year build, own, operate and maintain arrangement with GridX, and the project is set for completion in July 2011.
