Gaseous fuels come to the fore

The reality of future oil supply is driving the exploration of alternate fuels in road transport-reliant Australia.

The Society of Automotive Engineers – Australasia (SAE-A) is convening its third Gaseous Fuels Technology Conference in Melbourne on 26 and 27 July to debate the way ahead for the nation’s abundant supply of gaseous fuels.

Among the gaseous fuel industry leaders presenting their views at the SAE-A Conference is ELGAS government relations manager Warren Nielsen, who will deliver the message that “Australia’s abundant gas reserves place it in a unique situation to provide world leadership in moving to a gaseous fuels strategy, to replace its reliance on imported oil and finished products for road transport, and allowing Australia to become self sufficient.”

Queensland Energy Resources CEO and managing director Pearce Bowman will take a long-term view as leader of a business to develop shale oil extraction in a socially and environmentally acceptable way. He will present the case for a diverse fuels future for Australia: “The future of transportation in Australia will require rapid and large scale development of an unconventional fuels sector, a sector in which shale to liquids can and should play a major role, together with bio fuels, biodiesel, coal to liquids and gas to liquids. The technology for responsible development of shale to liquids exists. All that is required to bring another major Australian industry to life is commercial perseverance and political support.”

The economic imperative to focus on Australia’s abundant gaseous fuels will be summarised simply by the Natural Gas Vehicle Association’s Ollie Clarke, AM: “At 150 US dollars a barrel and a 70 US cents exchange rate for the Australian dollar, we will spend $30 billion a year. Can we afford that?”
