Queensland seeks big role in aviation biofuel development

Minister for Primary Industries, Fisheries, Rural and Regional Queensland Tim Mulherin has invited the aviation industry to contribute to the State Government’s vision of a new bio fuels industry in Queensland.

Mr Mulherin said the release of the strategic directions for development of the Queensland bio-based industrial products sector discussion paper was a step towards Queensland become a world leader in the new industry.

“With worldwide petroleum reserves declining, Queensland is looking at leading the way in developing a cleaner, greener and cheaper airline fuel and other products through the development of the new bio products industry,” he said.

“Biofuel is the future of the aviation industry and that’s why we want feedback from the industry that will use these new fuels.”

Mr Mulherin said bio-based aviation fuel was just one of the products that could be developed in Queensland.

“The exciting new sector uses plant biomass, like sugarcane and algae to make fuels, plastics and chemicals traditionally produced from petroleum,” Mr Mulherin said.

“As established fuel sources become harder to get and more expensive, industries like the aviation industry will be looking for cheaper, greener alternatives.

“The sector will also generate thousands of green jobs, particularly in rural and regional Queensland.

“We’re looking at promoting and expanding the revolutionary bio fuels industry in Queensland by seeking feedback from those involved in the sector.

“Queensland expertise could offer many of the answers the world is looking for when it comes to green fuel alternatives as well as substitutes for many of the chemicals that can be harmful to the environment.”

“In May the Queensland Government provided $2 million in Smart Futures Funding to the University of Queensland’s Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) to research the production of aviation biofuels from a variety of feedstocks.

“The AIBN Queensland Sustainable Aviation Fuel Initiative, led by Professor Lars Nielsen, is now investigating the production of aviation biofuels sourced from sugarcane juice and bagasse, oilseed trees such as Pongamia, and algae.

“US interest in the project is strong, with Boeing contributing $450,000 and leading US renewable products company Amyris Biotechnologies contributing over $1 million to support the project.”

Mr Mulherin said the Queensland Government had already provided funding to infrastructure projects to support the industry.

“Last week with the Premier, we opened the Mackay Renewable Biocommodities Pilot Plant, towards which the Government contributed $3.1 million,” he said.

“We also recently also contributed $166,000 to the Townsville Algae Biodiesel Plant”

Mr Mulherin said it was expected that bio products such as aviation fuel will cost the same as petrochemical alternatives within ten years.

“Through this discussion paper we’ve identified the issues we believe need addressing, but it’s now open to every Queenslander to have their say on how we move forward to ensure we make the best use of our resources,” he said.

“That includes any concerns over land use, cropping, water availability, waste management and sustainability.”

Mr Mulherin said the international bio-industries sector was currently dominated by the US, Europe and Brazil, but Queensland had a range of natural competitive advantages that bode well for an industry in the state.

“Because of our natural resources, expertise in crop development and biotechnology, well-established research institutes and a strong regulatory environment, Queensland is well-placed to become world leaders in the this industry,” he said.

“Green aviation fuel - the holy grail to an industry that accounts for around two per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions - could be the bio-based product that puts Queensland on the map.”

Mr Mulherin said regional Queensland could be the real winner out of a new bio-products industry for the State.

More information about Queensland’s emerging bio-products sector and the discussion paper is available at www.science.qld.gov.au.

The closing date for consultation is 30 August 2010.
