Regional winner for forklift apprentice skills contest

TMHA president Steve Harper, Rohin Chamberlain and chairman Terry Unnai.

A country-trained Toyota forklift service technician has undertaken a study trip to Japan after winning the Toyota Material Handing Australia (TMHA) Apprentice Skills Contest.

Twenty-two year-old Rohin Chamberlain has now completed his apprenticeship and is a fully qualified field service technician based at TMH's Lismore branch.

His study tour included the Takahama plant near Nagoya, where Toyota-branded materials handling equipment is manufactured, the famed Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology, and Kyoto (the ancient capital of Japan).

The annual TMHA skills competition is designed to keep Toyota forklift technicians at the forefront of industry standards, said national service manager John Pearsall.

"The national finalists meet at our Sydney headquarters for two days of theoretical and practical tests," he said.

"High skills standards among our technicians increase customer satisfaction and workplace safety.

"Toyota pioneered specialist TAFE training for forklift technicians in Australia."

Rohin Chamberlain said completing his apprenticeship in a small branch gave him a comprehensive grounding in his trade.

"The advantage of working in a smaller branch is that you learn to work on anything that comes through the workshop door," he said.

"We cover everything - Toyota product, BT, Raymond, Toyota skid-steer loaders and even other brands, as requested by customers.

"The Japan study tour gave me a window on the whole Toyota Group, because we saw car and forklift manufacturing, parts and technology centres, and the amazing museum, as well as being able to sit in the very latest Toyota vehicles."

Rohin and his fellow Lismore-based mobile service technicians cover the Far North Coast of NSW - north to the Queensland border, south to Grafton and west to Tenterfield.

TMH North Coast manager Andrew Booth said Rohin's win in the skills competition and participation in the study tour was a highlight for the Coffs Harbour and Lismore branches.

"Rohin has been good value for us from the time he started - and it was the icing on the cake that he won," Andrew Booth said.

Rohin Chamberlain is already undertaking further technical study at TAFE and building a car to compete in off-road four-wheel drive events.
