Consumer electronics sector begins eCommerce pilot

Australia’s leading consumer electronics retailers and suppliers are set to pilot data synchronisation between trading partners via GS1net. The pilot is part of a move by the Consumer Electronics Working Action Group (CEWAG) to promote eCommerce in their sector.

CEWAG was set up in 2009 with the aim of:
  • Eliminating paper-based forms through the adoption of data synchronisation.
  • Removing manual processes.
  • Improving the accuracy of master data.
  • Reviewing the reverse logistics processes to make them more efficient.

Key participants in the group are retailers Harvey Norman, Dick Smith, JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys, Bing Lee and Betta Electrical and suppliers Electrolux, Sony, Sunbeam, Canon and Panasonic.

GS1net is not-for-profit GS1 Australia’s data synchronisation service, already used by the food and grocery, liquor, hardware and healthcare sectors. By using GS1net, trading partners can achieve:

  • Improved accuracy of item master data;
  • Improved accuracy of orders;
  • Improved inventory control and management;
  • Consistency of sell-through reports;
  • Consistency of item descriptions;
  • Increased accuracy of printed catalogues;
  • Lower overall supply chain costs.
CEWAG steering committee chairman Shane Harris of Betta Electrical said the GS1net pilot would be in the first quarter of 2011.

Mr Harris said the work completed by CEWAG’s three working groups had made the GS1net pilot possible. The group’s eMessaging working group had completed a draft of Messaging Implementation Guidelines (MIG) for orders, order responses, order changes and dispatch advice and will now look at eInvoicing. The master data management workgroup had completed the data set and the reverse logistics workgroup had reviewed return-reason codes and produced a consolidated list of codes.

Through GS1 Australia CEWAG will be involved in the work being done at a global level to improve the consumer electronics supply chain.
