Optimised Australian routing package for truck operators

The Bestrane Group has integrated NAVTEQ Transport to the Route Planner application from Descartes to generate optimised routes specifically for Australian roads with thier unique transportation restrictions. With this successful integration GPS applications can now factor the unique transportation restrictions that are placed on Australia’s road network as a result of mass management, dimensional restrictions, bridge heights, etc.

Designed specifically for trucks and large vehicles, NAVTEQ Transport enables the development of a wide range of solutions in the areas of truck management and navigation. Incorporated in the package are over 20 attributes such as physical and legal restrictions including bridge heights and weight limits, traffic signs, truck speed limits, hazardous material and preferred truck routes. These attributes are available for all the major highways throughout Australia. Additional coverage in the metro areas of Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Canberra, Perth and Adelaide includes arterial and secondary roads.

To keep the product relevant to today’s trucking industry, NAVTEQ conducted interviews with truck operators globally, including interviews in Australia. Information about low bridges, which are a part of the NAVTEQ Transport data set, was found to be of critical importance to truck drivers across all regions. In Australia, drivers are particularly time conscious, indicating a strong desire for GPS-based solutions that can save them time on the road.

“Our interviews revealed that drivers plan their routes so that it takes them to their destination in the quickest manner,” said Tiffany Tracey, senior vice president, Asia Pacific map and content products, NAVTEQ. “By utilising the attributes in NAVTEQ Transport, applications can provide routes that take into account restrictions that impede truck movement, thereby slowing their destination arrival time. Creating routes that avoid these obstacles can lead to greater driver satisfaction saving them both time and money.”

“The Descartes Route Planner application can now use this additional information from NAVTEQ to generate routes that support the additional constraints placed on the transport industry,” said David Sanders, managing director of the Bestrane Group.

“This allows vehicle schedulers to remove additional steps from the planning process that were often required to cater for unique constraints of local road networks.”

This is particularly important for very large vehicles or those carrying hazardous loads where designated roads have space limitations and restrictions based on the time of day.

“Australia has several unique transport regulations including vehicle requirements related to mass, type of load, vehicle dimensions and time of day. We have now integrated these requirements into the NAVTEQ database and have made this information available to the local market via our transport product. Descartes and Bestrane are now able to utilise this capability and allow for advanced route planning capabilities for its clients,” said Kirk Mitchell, vice president, NAVTEQ Oceania sales.

Routes that are developed using this information will now automatically support the detailed constraints that are becoming more and more common throughout the Australian road network, providing for fewer kilometres travelled, increased customer service, lower emissions and increased vehicle utilisation.
