Intelligent Transport Systems' national awards program

ITS Australia president Dr Norm Pidgeon.

ITS Australia has launched an awards program to recognise the contribution made by intelligent transport systems (ITS) in creating a safer, greener, less congested and more efficient national transport system.

The National ITS Australia Awards will reward significant Australian innovation in ITS products and services and are open to all local business offices of ITS Australia members.

ITS Australia president Dr Norm Pidgeon said the Australian ITS industry has developed leading-edge information and communications technologies for transport infrastructure and vehicles, and has deployed some of the most sophisticated ITS applications in the world.

ITS includes electronic technologies to provide drivers and travellers with accurate up to the minute information, as well as behind the scenes management of transport networks. “One exciting emerging application is directly linking vehicles to the surrounding infrastructure and to each other. These systems can provide safety warnings and significant improvements in traffic flow management,” said Norm Pidgeon.

“When we add technologies for road, rail and public transport traffic management; convenient and accurate electronic tolling and freight management; navigation and information aides, including traffic updates, parking and fuel availability, there is clearly a fertile field for national awards entries,” he said.

ITS adds value

“In 2009, we hosted the successful Australian ITS Summit, the first major national forum to explore and debate the role of ITS in all modes of our national transport system,” Norm Pidgeon said.

“That summit clearly demonstrated that pressure on Australia’s transport infrastructure has reached the critical mass required for the safety, environmental, economic and social benefits of ITS technologies to become the major value-adding tool in our networks.

“Smart electronic and communication ITS technologies linking vehicles and infrastructure are making our roads safer, less congested and are helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“These awards will recognise organisations that deliver the leading ITS solutions to Australia’s mobility challenges. This program will also challenge the Australian ITS sector to continue to develop and deploy technologies at world’s best practice standard,” he said.

Awards criteria

The Awards program offers two award categories, with each offering a $10,000 prize:
  • National ITS Australia Excellence Award: Nominations for this category must be based on at least one of the themes of safety, mobility, or the environment. Second and third places will receive trophies.
  • Victorian Government Road Transport Innovation Prize: This award will be presented to the individual, organisation or road-controlling authority that has most benefited the Victorian community with an ITS initiative. Funded by the Victorian Government, this prize will be presented by Victorian Roads and Ports Minister Tim Pallas.
“We encourage all ITS organisations in Australia to enter the Awards. If they are not members, they can submit membership application forms for the basic level of corporate membership with their Awards nomination forms,” said Norm Pidgeon.

The awards will be presented at the ITS Australia Annual Dinner at the Melbourne City RACV Club on 11 November 2010. The ITS Australia Annual General Meeting will be held prior to the Annual Dinner. These events provide excellent national networking opportunities with government and industry ITS leaders.
