Mack shifts to mDrive and SCR

Paul Matthei

Significantly increasing synergies with its Volvo parent, Mack is set to introduce a two-pedal automated transmission known as mDrive behind a more powerful selective catalytic reduction (SCR) equipped version of the MP8 engine in its Granite and Trident models. Both the mDrive transmission and the MP8 engine are bulldog-specific variants of Volvo’s 12-speed I-shift automated transmission and D13 (13 litre) six-cylinder engine respectively.

In Granite guise the MP8 SCR engine offers a choice of ratings from 435 hp/ 1625 lb ft (324 kW/ 2203 Nm) to 500 hp/ 1840 lb ft (373 kW/ 2495 Nm), while for Trident on-road customers the powerplant is tuned to deliver 535 hp (399 kW) accompanied by a mountain-munching 1920 lb ft (2603 Nm) of torque. In all applications the MP8 is said to deliver gritty performance over a wide operating range whilst offering similarly powerful engine braking and class-leading fuel efficiency.

On the new mDrive – available exclusively with Granite and Trident models – Mack says its home-grown automated ‘box maximises driver comfort, improves fuel efficiency and allows a greater payload. Having no clutch pedal, mDrive’s clever electronics precisely control clutch and gearshifting operations that are varied in synch with changes in grade, vehicle speed, acceleration, torque demand, weight and wind resistance.

In addition to the standard ‘performance’ and ‘economy’ modes allowing the operator to tailor shift points best suited to their individual requirements, the package can be optioned with a specially-developed ‘construction mode’ software to enable optimised shift performance tailored to off-road applications.

Also available in 2011 Granite and Trident models is the new Mack C150/151 series 20-tonne rated tandem drive axle assembly that comes standard with driver-controlled diff locks. According to Mack, this option provides the ultimate in traction and control on the muddiest construction sites and is equally at home on the highway.

Other Trident features include the choice between an axle back or axle forward steer axle configuration as well as large capacity fuel and AdBlue tank options. In addition, the upgraded interior includes the widely-acclaimed Isri Big Boy driver’s seat as standard.

The Big Boy driver’s seat is also standard in the new ‘little brother’ Metro-Liner which offers the productivity advantages of low tare weight and tight turning circle for construction or urban on-road applications. For construction customers, the Cummins ISL SCR engine rated up to 400 hp (298 kW) combined with the latest generation Allison automatic transmission is now standard Metro-Liner fare.
