X'Trapolis train manufacturing under way in Ballarat

Alstom Transport and UGL Rail have started manufacturing X’Trapolis trains for Melbourne suburban network operator Metro Train at their factory in Ballarat as part of a local content agreement boosting jobs in the state’s manufacturing industry. The 38 train set contract includes assembly of 19 trains and the manufacture of another 19.

“The initial assembly and manufacture of associated parts will result in 135 new jobs for Victoria – 65 new jobs at Ballarat’s UGL Rail factory as well as 70 additional direct new jobs through supply chain activity,” said Victorian Minister for Industry and Regional Development, Jacinta Allen.

The president of Alstom Australia, Chris Raine, has emphasised the benefits to Australian suppliers the contract will provide. Other Victorian companies that will benefit from the project include Austbreck, Cablex, Calgraphics, Glassform, Sutclifee Engineering, and Toolern.

The manufacturing facility in Ballarat could be expanded if Alstom Australia and UGL Rail win the contract to supply 50 new Citadis trams to Melbourne.

More than 100 companies across the state and the nation are now connected through Alstom Australia and UGL Rail’s forum, INTERCONNECT, designed to develop business in Australia and help members service markets overseas. The creation of INTERCONNECT has been supported by Transport Integrated Management Systems, the Industry Capability Network, Enterprise Connect and the Australia Industry Group.
