Strong entries, big winners at the first ITS Australia National Awards

Australia’s Intelligent Transport Systems industry has responded strongly to the launch of the new ITS Australia National Awards program.

The National ITS Australia Awards reward significant Australian innovation in ITS products and services and are open to all local business offices of ITS Australia members. ITS Australia launched the awards program to recognise the contribution made by intelligent transport systems (ITS) to creating a safer, greener, less congested and more efficient national transport system.

ITS Australia president Dr Norm Pidgeon said the strong response received by the inaugural ITS Awards reflected the local industry’s innovative smart transport solutions. “The award nominations cover leading-edge traffic and heavy vehicle management systems, sophisticated driver navigation and safety aids and public transport priority management programs,” said Norm Pidgeon.

Awards nominations and winners

The awards program offered two award categories with each offering a $10,000 prize.

Nominations for the National ITS Australia Excellence Award, which are based on at least one of the themes of safety, mobility, or the environment, included:
  • VicRoads – M1 Freeway Management System for Monash-CityLink-Westgate upgrade.
  • Transport Certification Australia – Intelligent Access Program for heavy vehicle management.
  • Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure – Road Condition Signs - Automation
  • Swinburne University of Technology – Roads Corporation of Victoria (VicRoads) Ramp Metering Team for a Coordinated Freeway Ramp Signal system as part of the M1 Freeway upgrade.
  • OPTALERT – OPTALERT Driver Safety System and Fatigue Risk Profiler.

  • Intelematics – SUNA Traffic Channel for traffic and road condition information.
  • Visionstream – Telepath Highway Safety Alert System with CB-UHF audible warning.
  • Roads and Traffic Authority NSW – Public Transport Information and Priority System to improve reliability and passenger information.

  • Sensis and NICTA – Road Traffic Sign Recognition technology.
  • SAGE – SAGE Transport Infrastructure Capability Automation.
The joint winners are VicRoads and Transurban, for the upgrade of the M1 highway.

The Victorian Government Road Transport Innovation Prize funded by the Victorian Government was presented by Victorian Roads and Ports Minister Tim Pallas to the individual, organisation or road-controlling authority that has most benefited the Victorian community with an ITS initiative. Nominations for this award included:
  • Transport Certification Australia – Intelligent Access Program for heavy vehicle management.
  • Intelematics – SUNA Traffic Channel for traffic and road condition information.
  • Transmax – STREAMS integrated Intelligent Transport System for M1 Berwick to Werribee corridor.
The winner is  Intelematics Australia Pty Ltd, for the SUNA Traffic Channel.

The awards were presented at the ITS Australia Annual Dinner at the Melbourne City RACV Club on 11 November 2010. “While recognising our members’ ITS skills and experience, these awards also help to showcase Australian ingenuity to international markets,” said Norm Pidgeon.

Awards sponsor, transport infrastructure planning, engineering and construction group Sinclair Knight Merz, presented the National ITS Australia Excellence Award at the prize ceremony. Gino Dompietro, SKM group manager for ITS, said the company is proud to support the new awards program. “As a long-standing supporter of ITS Australia and a major player in that sector, SKM congratulates ITS Australia for launching this important program,” said Gino Dompietro.

“The awards highlight the achievements of local ITS organisations and encourage them to deliver safer, cleaner and more effective mobility solutions through the use of practical, state-of-the-art technologies,” he said.
