456 racking system maximises space for fashion DC

Italian logistic giant Snatt, well known in high fashion circles, is fitting out eight distribution centres with Metalsistem 456 racking. The DCs have a combined total of 40,000 square metres of floor space with an additional mezzanine facility of some 20,000 square metres.

The entire operation has a capacity in excess of 3 million garments managed in either hung or folded configuration.

Metalsistem Australia's director Oshi Kirk says the contract win was due to the company being able to provide storage and racking that has been specifically designed to maximise space and accommodate the inherent complexities of storing a diverse range of fashion garments.

“The Super 456 is a heavy-duty integrated system that provided the ability to construct a 4-tiered mezzanine structure, which literally gave the customer the opportunity to hit the roof and use all the available ceiling space.

“It can also be constructed to a height of up to 12 metres, incorporating multi-tiered standalone mezzanine structures with a higher load capacity per square metre for the flooring and walkways,” said Ms. Kirk.

The Snatt installation uses mezzanine spans of 4.5 x 4.5 square metres with load bearing capacities of 500kg/m2 and, in order to provide receiving, dispatch and quality control areas, long-span cut-out sections were constructed into the structure on the upper levels.

The 456's unique upright profile design is manufactured with no holes in a closed-box formation that can accommodate eight beams connected to the upright at 90° on the one level.

The Super 456 system’s design also allows for configuration enhancements, such as drive-in or drive-through racking. Additionally, high-rise storage structures, multi-tiered and wide-span mezzanines can be incorporated to achieve a load rating up to 700 kg /m².

Wide spans between columns are constructed by using specially-designed beam connectors and upright supports. Many companies have specified a requirement to construct the Super 456 over existing installations. This can be achieved without interrupting day-to-day operational activities while the work is being carried out, allowing for an increase in warehouse capacity without the need to restock or relocate.

All frames are constructed from 3.1B certified high-tensile steel, which are tested to comply with the main international accreditation bodies such as the TÜV for loading and FEM for the design approvals.
