GKR's Cats 'cross the paddock'

GKR drivers Mark and Clare Bolitho. Their assessment so far: “It’s a phenomenal truck.”

Welshpool (Perth) based GKR Transport has purchased two Cat CT630 90-tonne GCM rated highway trucks for its east-west express freight operation.

Equipped with 50-inch (1270 mm) sleeper bunks and powered by 550 hp Cat C15 engines, the two new trucks are each averaging over 8000 km a week on Perth-Melbourne and Perth-Sydney general freight runs.

For the past three months, one of the two CT630s has been driven almost exclusively by the husband-wife truck driving team of Mark and Clare Bolitho. Their assessment so far: “It’s a phenomenal truck.”

Hauling a double roadtrain grossing 75 to 80 tonnes between Perth and Melbourne, the couple has reputedly attained an average fuel consumption of 63 l/100 km (4.48 mpg) over the first 73,000 km.

“The power is unbelievable,” Mark says. “We can go up certain hills at 1350 to 1400 rpm at 100 km/h without coming out of top gear.”

“It drives effortlessly,” Clare adds, “and it’s quiet too. I can answer the phone while Mark’s driving and people will actually ask if we’re in the truck.”
