SRH buys 'Big Red'

SRH Milk Haulage co-owner Scott Harvey at the R 730 handover. “It is better to have a bit more power than you need …”

SRH Milk Haulage has taken delivery of Australia’s first Scania R 730 prime mover – the same unit that was on display at the Brisbane Truck Show earlier this year.

Boasting 730 hp and 2581 lb ft of torque, the R 730 currently holds the mantle of world’s most powerful on-highway series production truck. However, arch antagonist and compatriot Volvo is planning to rain on Scania’s parade with the European launch of a 750 hp FH 16 early next year.

SRH runs 35 prime movers and 56 B-double and single trailer units, employing 80 drivers and staff. It provides daily bulk milk haulage from dairy farms in the Hunter Valley, Manning Valley and Tamworth regions to Dairy Farmers’ plants at Hexham (near Newcastle) and Sydney. The company typically keeps its trucks for three years, in which time each travels between 800,000 and one million km.

According to SRH co-owner and self confessed European truck fan Scott Harvey, “It is better to have a bit more power than you need, and the drivers also like this. I think you get better fuel (economy), faster trip times and the truck is not so stressed.”

Operating under mass management, typical SRH B-double sets carry 37,500 litres and on average gross 64.5 tonnes. The R 730 will complete several trips a week between Walcha and Sydney via Thunderbolt Way.
