Port Botany container trade defies expectations

Container trade through Port Botany reached almost 178,650 TEU in October 2011.

Sydney Ports chief executive officer Grant Gilfillan said that the trade result - down by 0.8 pc on the October result last year - was better than expected, given the issues faced at Port Botany through the month of October.

“Equipment failure and crane rail maintenance, with continued industrial relations issues at Patrick stevedores, have resulted in ships omitting Sydney and the port becoming congested at the quayside,” Mr Gilfillan said.

Patrick advised customers in mid October that a reduction in contracted pro forma volume would be imposed. This resulted in no empty export containers being moved from Patrick for one week, as well as the cessation of transhipment cargo for a period.

Despite this, full containerised exports reached almost 37,390 TEU in October 2011, up 0.9 per cent on the same period last year.

Full containerised imports for October 2011 reached 92,620 TEU, 2.9 per cent higher than October 2010.

Mr Gilfillan said the leading containerised exports for the month of October 2011 were cereals, chemicals and machinery and transport equipment.

“All up, these commodities represent 27.4 per cent of total full exports,” he said.

Exported chemicals include plastic materials, artificial resins, organic and inorganic chemicals as well as explosives and other chemical materials and products.

“The key import commodities for October 2011 were machinery & transport equipment, miscellaneous manufactures, chemicals.

“Combined, these commodities represent over 57.1 per cent of total containerised imports,” Mr Gilfillan said.

Imported machinery and transport equipment includes electrical and non-electrical machinery, industrial machinery & equipment, motor vehicle parts and accessories as well as agricultural machinery and equipment.

Imported chemicals include plastic materials, essential oils and perfume materials and medical and pharmaceutical products.

The majority of containerised imports were sourced from East Asia (46.4 per cent) and South East Asia (16.4 per cent), which combined accounted for over 60 per cent of total container imports through Port Botany.

Mr Gilfillan said Sydney Ports was managing the expected increase in container trade by investing in infrastructure such as the Port Botany Expansion, which will double the capacity of the current port to meet projected long term growth.

“In the meantime, recent factors such as adverse weather events, industrial relations issues and equipment failure have underlined the congestion caused by lack of latent capacity at Port Botany.

“Until the third terminal commences operations in 2013, this lack of capacity and competition is a challenge for us - and for all stakeholders,” Mr Gilfillan said.
