New South Wales rail transport: new directions needed


Respected railway specialist Professor Philip Laird, FCILT, Comp IE Aust, of the University of Wollongong, in his address to Chartered Institute of Transport and Logistics in Sydney, challenged the slow pace of railway reform currently being experienced in New South Wales.
 
In contrasting the many improvements to rail services that have been made recently in all other mainland states of Australia, Professor Laird highlighted the need for new rail programmes to reduce journey times and get more freight moving to and from the ports back onto rail. In addition, at a time record outlays are being made on New South Wales roads, he echoed the official 2003 Parry report into sustainable transport in its recommendations for a review of both rail fares and road pricing.
 
Professor Laird, in considering the rail services we need today, said: “Governments and transport planners must address the real mobility needs of the community today. Rail services must improve both within Sydney and in the regions to cater for present and future demands. NSW can no longer afford fall behind in the delivery of high quality rail services and politicians must be prepared to make difficult and challenging decisions. These decisions could well include road congestion pricing for inner Sydney.”
