DP World to upgrade rail capacity at Port Botany

DP World has announced a new round of investments in rail infrastructure upgrades at its Port Botany terminal.

Ganesh Raj, senior vice president and managing director of DP World in the ANZ region said: “Capacity improvements to the Rail Yard scheduled for February 2012 will open up a third operational siding and give the Port Botany terminal a dual entry and exit point for rail.

“Once completed, this new rail infrastructure will provide added capacity to all operators and help DP World to improve rail efficiency and productivity for the long term.

“Upgrading rail capacity within the terminal is consistent with the NSW Government’s objective of doubling the rail modal share of containers from the existing 14 per cent to its long term goal of 28 per cent by 2021.”

Working with Sydney Ports Corporation, DP World says it has invested in increasing its terminal yard space which is dedicated to rail operations.

The capacity upgrade builds on the rail sidings on the Inter-Terminal Access Road (ITAR) project that have been in operation since 2010. DP World has also purchased two new reach stackers for the rail yard.

Given this next phase of upgrades involves complex civil works in the existing rail area of the terminal, DP World will co-ordinate its works to coincide with ARTC’s planned works at Port Botany in February 2012.

As such there will be no rail operations between 30 January and 27 February 2012 at the DP World Port Botany Terminal.

DP World is working with industry stakeholders on a plan to accommodate alternatives to rail during this post- peak period.
