Australia's first rail safety boss may come from overseas

A global search to find a CEO for Australia’s first ever National Rail Safety Regulator is under way.
 
Australia’s railways are to come under one regulator and one set of regulations, and the government is scouring the world to find the best candidate to lead this reform.
 
Following a recent agreement by all Australian governments, Australia will have one National Rail Safety Regulator from January 2013, replacing countless regulations set down separately by seven Australian states and territories.
 
The new National Rail Safety Regulator, based in Adelaide, will oversee safety in the country’s entire urban passenger rail networks and interstate freight operations.
 
The CEO/regulator will facilitate the seamless and safe operation of rail transport and promote rail safety and safety improvement across the country.
