One year on from claiming its SafeWork Award, Crown Equipment is implementing additional initiatives to minimise risk.
In December 2015, the company scored a win in the WorkCover NSW SafeWork awards for the Best Workplace Health and Safety Management System (Private Sector).
Crown’s win was made possible by a safety program set in place six years ago, known as ‘Zeroharm’, which is still helping the company improve its workplace safety record.
The Zeroharm safety program includes the integration of deliberate practices and processes and provides a consistent way of managing workplace health and safety. With the implementation of this safety system, Crown has moved beyond legislative compliance into a values-based, learning process. The company’s policies are designed to guide the behaviour of all workers at every level of the organisation.
Zeroharm was built on the ideals and beliefs that all injuries are preventable, no task is so important that it cannot be done safely, all hazards can be identified and their risks managed, and everyone has a personal responsibility for the health and safety of themselves and their co-workers.
Crown runs a substantial parts distribution centre in Smithfield, New South Wales, which supplies Crown lift truck parts to Australian, New Zealand and Southeast Asian customers. This facility achieved its 11th year without a single Lost Time Injury (LTI).
National manager, safety, risk, environment and quality Anthony Keating said: “Staff in the parts distribution centre worked over 330,000 man hours and filled over 8.8 million orders during this period. A further 11 Crown facilities have achieved five consecutive years without an LTI,” Mr Keating said.
“In 2016, Crown celebrated its sixth annual Safety Week. Each year we look at a particular segment of the workforce and engage with them to think more closely about safety in their specific work environment.
“Our Safety Week programs have also been extended to Crown New Zealand and Southeast Asia for the first time.
Recently a new initiative was established, the Crown Risk Profile.
“We developed the Risk Profile to help us understand the risks associated with our business activities more clearly,” Mr Keating said.
“It’s a benchmark that helps us compare our current position against other organisations and we’re also using it to achieve alignment between the risk profile and our mitigation strategies.
“By undertaking the risk profile project we aim to make risk management more systematic, comprehensive and integrated into normal business activity.
“Through this process, risks are identified and quantified enabling us to make informed business decisions and increase operational efficiencies,” he said.
