Focus on carbon

Measuring carbon footprints could also protect a company’s share price and create a long term competitive advantage.

Every day we see ever increasing demands being made on the manufacturing and supply chain sectors to make better use of resources. Taking action to meet these demands not only makes sense from a 'social responsibility' perspective, it also makes good economic sense. Organisations have an opportunity to become leaders within their industry sector and by doing so differentiate themselves from their competitors.

Will Arnott, director of Lexian Solutions,  is one of the keynote speakers at the apics 2008 International Conference at Surfers Paradise, Marriott Resort. Will’s keynote “Measuring Carbon Footprints" will cover CO2 footprints and designing carbon emissions out of the supply chain.

A Nielson Global online survey showed that the biggest concern in the next six months is global warming, with Australia ranked third highest.

Recent research has shown that efforts to improve shipping and transport efficiency assumes a fairly low priority for most organisations, with some sources quoting fewer than one in ten actively involved in initiatives to make shipping and transport more efficient or planning energy reduction measures within the next twelve months.

It is now possible for companies to model the carbon emissions generated by their current supply chain and compare this with alternative distribution strategies, thereby identifying where carbon emissions can be reduced. Both transport and warehousing operations are taken into account and enables companies to look at a range of strategies for minimising carbon emissions.

For companies in the 21st century, tackling carbon exposure is more than good environmental stewardship; it could also protect a company’s share price and create a long term competitive advantage.

Register for the apics 2008 International Conference.
